Cable companies mulling a ‘Netflix tax’ for high data usage (Digital Trends)

Posted under Technology on Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Digital Trends - According to a report from Bloomberg earlier today, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Charter Communications was looking into usage-based fees based on the amount of bandwidth consumed rather than simply a flat rate for a specific transmission speed. This modification in pricing would impose extra monthly fees on consumers that consume larger amounts of bandwidth, likely due to watching high definition video on services like Netflix, Vudu and Hulu Plus. Charlie Ergen, chairman of Dish Network, estimates that a typical fee structure could cost consumers an additional $20 a month. If a consumer was only subscribed to Netflix, it would cost a total of $335 a year to access the video streaming service with that additional $20 surcharge figured into the total yearly price. Joe Peyronnin: Obama’s Looking Good

Posted under Uncategorized on Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 at 9:53 pm

In the words of one long-time Republican, "The Republicans are making President Obama look good." Well, he makes a very good point about the Republican field of presidential candidates.

It appears that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is very frustrated. Despite his energetic campaign and strong debate performances, Romney cannot score more than 25% in polls of Republican voters. The problem is that he has changed positions on key issues in an effort to win more support in his party. And, just in case some Americans haven't noticed, the Democratic National Committee has been airing a political commercial called "Mitt vs. Mitt" that drives the point home.

Romney's campaign has recently resorted to airing a misleading political ad that shows President Barack Obama saying, "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose." But then candidate Obama was merely quoting a statement that Senator John McCain had made. When the president's campaign cried foul, Romney responded, "We are obviously getting under their skin."

Todd, Dana Moore, West Memphis 3 Parents, Request That ‘Paradise Lost 3′ Be Excluded From Oscar Race

JONESBORO, Ark. -- The parents of one of three West Memphis, Ark., boys found dead 18 years ago are asking that a documentary about the killings be excluded from Academy Award consideration.

Todd and Dana Moore made the request in a letter sent Nov. 22 to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' documentary division. In it, the Moores argue that "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" glorifies Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who were released from prison in August after their sentences were set aside and they pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Millions of employees in Great Britain mounted the first General Strike in many years today, after the country's coalition government threatened to impose more cuts in retirement benefits and pay for public workers.

It was a smash success. As many as two million strikers proved that the public's patience with the unjust fiscal regime known as 'austerity economics' has its limits. It highlighted the important role unions can and must play in the fight for a more just and stable economy.

And it raised an important question for the United States: Could it happen here?

30 percent of iPhone 4S owners paid the iPhone 4 early termination fee (Digital Trends)

Posted under Technology on Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Digital Trends - According to a survey conducted by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, the research firm found that 30 percent of iPhone 4S owners upgraded from the iPhone 4. Since the iPhone 4 was released during June 2010, anyone upgrading to the iPhone 4S approximately 16 months later would be subject to the early termination fee issued by wireless service providers like Verizon and AT&T. For instance, the early termination fee on smartphones for AT&T is set at $325 per line minus $10 for each month of service. Anyone upgrading to the iPhone 4S that previously purchased an iPhone 4 at launch would have paid around $175 to get their hands on the new model. Verizon customers likely paid around $270 to upgrade since the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 was released during February 2011. Comments are off for this article
