TOKYO — A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck under the sea south of Japan on Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital but causing no apparent damage or tsunami.
The quake struck near the uninhabited island of Torishima in the Pacific Ocean, about 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Tokyo, and its epicenter was about 370 kilometers (230 miles) below the sea, the Meterological Agency said. It did not generate a tsunami.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Panthers forward Krys Barch was ejected after reportedly directing a racial slur at a Montreal player Saturday night, and Florida coach Kevin Dineen said it was now a matter for the NHL to investigate.
Barch was given a game misconduct after a dustup at the end of the first period in Florida's 3-2 win. The Miami Herald, citing an unidentified league official, said linesman Darren Gibbs overheard Barch use the slur against P.K. Subban, whose parents are Jamaican.
Barch left the dressing room before media members were allowed in for postgame interviews, The on-ice officials were not made available for comment.

Happy New Year, HuffPosters! This out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new weekend is my favorite time of the year -- and the perfect opportunity for cleaning out our internal hard drives of all the accumulated detritus from 2011, including Anthony Weiner's photographic skills, Charlie Sheen's "winning" streak, Rick Perry's "Oops" moment, Kim Kardashian's 72-day marriage, 9-9-9, Tebowing, Carmageddon, Newt Gingrich blaming his affairs on his passion for America, the Raptureless May 21, and the president sending an end of the year
fundraising email to tens of thousands with the subject line "Hey"... As we leave 2011 behind, let's drop the faux intimacy, clear our personal hard drives of any hurts, grudges, and disappointments and start the New Year with a clean slate -- ready to welcome all the surprises, opportunities, and, yes, challenges, 2012 will bring. Let's celebrate the spirit of renewal that is the essence of new beginnings -- and that the world so desperately needs.

"All week! All year! We'll still be here!"
"Whose park? Our park!"
The chants went up 10, 20, maybe 100 deep shortly before midnight at Zuccotti Park as Occupy Wall Street activists surprised the New York Police Department and retook the space that was once the homebase for their movement. The barricades surrounding the park went down. They have since been removed. Protesters were allowed to come and go through the park.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points, Tyson Chandler had 18 of his 22 in the second half, and the New York Knicks assumed control early in beating the Sacramento Kings 114-92 on Saturday night.
The Knicks didn't miss starting forward Amare Stoudemire, their leading rebounder and second-leading scorer who sat out with a sprained left ankle. They got an unexpected lift from replacement Josh Harrellson, a rookie from Kentucky who made his first NBA start and had career highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds, and hit four 3-pointers.

McDONALD, Ohio (AP) — Officials say they believe the latest earthquake activity in northeast Ohio is related to the injection of wastewater into the ground near a fault line, creating enough pressure to cause seismic activity.
The wastewater comes from drilling operations that use the so-called fracking process to extract oil or gas from rock. But the Ohio Department of Natural Resources director said fracking is not causing the quakes. He said four injection wells within a five-mile radius of the already shuttered well in Youngstown will remain inactive while further scientific research is conducted.
The 4.0 magnitude quake Saturday in McDonald caused no serious injuries or property damage. The quake was the latest in a series to rattle the area. The Ohio Seismic Network said more small quakes are possible.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Mitt Romney's first-place showing in Iowa's most anticipated pre-caucus poll Saturday night made it clear that the former Massachusetts governor is riding high, although he still faces potential pitfalls.
Romney led the Des Moines Register survey with 24 percent support from 602 likely Republican caucus-goers, with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) close behind at 22 percent and former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) coming in at 15 percent, a full validation of his surging prospects here.
Over the last two days of the survey, in fact, Santorum pulled ahead of Paul to 21 percent, pushing the Texas congressman down to 18 percent. And 41 percent of those who answered the poll said they could still be persuaded to change their minds.

WASHINGTON -- At the end of a year in which five different candidates took turns leading in polls of likely Iowa caucus-goers, the final and most respected survey shows the Iowa caucuses headed toward a photo finish.
The final Des Moines Register Iowa poll shows Mitt Romney and Ron Paul leading the pack with 24 and 22 percent respectively, followed by 15 percent for Rick Santorum, 12 percent for Newt Gingrich, 11 percent for Rick Perry and 7 percent for Michele Bachmann.
But the pollsters report a twist: In the final two days of polling, Thursday and Friday nights, Romney still held a narrow lead (with 24 percent), but Santorum moved up to 21 percent, ahead of Paul at 18 percent.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A top Romney adviser, speaking on a not-for-attribution basis, said Friday that the former governor's percentage of the vote in the Iowa caucuses will be "held down to some degree by the Mormon factor. It's just a fact of life that we know we have to deal with."
The adviser might have made the statement in part to hold down expectations about Mitt Romney -- which have been rising steadily -- but it also highlights a significant and ongoing problem that Romney faces with evangelical and other voters: their skepticism and even fear of his deep Mormon faith.
Romney's religion is one reason why some GOP strategists and others think he could be a weaker-than-normal candidate for them in the Bible Belt South and elsewhere where conservative Christians are a key factor.

American women face a stark choice in the Iowa caucuses: re-elect feminist President Barack Obama who has advanced equality or caucus for a Republican who pledges to roll back generations of progress.ÂÂ
By the time California (where I chair the state Democratic Party's Women's Caucus) will cast votes for president, the primary race will already be all but over, so my hope is that Iowa caucusgoers plant a flag for womens rights now when the race begins. What happens in Iowa will say a lot about how American presidential candidates believe they must campaign to capture the feminist vow in November 2012.
Feminism - equality without apology - knows no partisan bounds. Women across the philosophical spectrum make our own choices about our families, our careers, and our politics. But in order to keep the freedom to make those choices, women need feminist leaders at the helm with policies that advance our progress. More important than identity politics are the feminist policies that allow women to make progress. When we look key indicators like economics, health, patriotism, and leadership, American voters have a clear choice: progress for women from President Obama's policies or repeal and reversal by his opponents.ÂÂ
